02 / VENTURE · VEHICLE ACQUISITION

A direct-from-consumer channel for buying used cars

I co-founded Cheddar Auto and served as chief operating officer. Sellers started with a license plate and got an offer, which gave our buying center a way to source used vehicles directly from the public.

The challenge

Used vehicle acquisition became one of the most pressing problems for the dealerships we were working with during the pandemic.

The approach

  • Started the seller experience with a license plate, so someone could reach an offer without first assembling their own vehicle details.
  • Produced the offer through the Accutrade valuation platform.
  • Sent the resulting leads to a buying center that purchased vehicles directly from the public.
  • Built it with Matthew Taylor and Burt Davidson, as an extension of the dealership work we were already doing together.

What came of it

Cheddar Auto changed how the buying center sourced pre-owned inventory, and the business was acquired by Ken Ganley Companies.

The interesting part was never the offer tool on its own. It was connecting a consumer-facing offer to a buying operation that could act on it.
